CLEVEDON LTC's 1st team secured the 1st Division North Somerset title with a convincing 10-0 win away at Woodlands in Weston.

The match was played in strong winds and heavy rain, but Mike Dale, Sid Falconer, James Bassett and Alex Allen beat the weather and Woodlands to win the title back from Bridgwater.

The 2nd team played Woodlands at home and managed an 8-3 win. The team included Jason Burgoyne, Mike Maiden, Mark Riggott and Ryan Reynolds. The result cements their place in Division 2 for the next summer season.

The 3rd team travelled away to Winscombe to beat their B team 10-0. The match played by Alex Harrington, Rob Lewis, Jon Burgoyne and Ross Adams secured the Division 7 title and will earn them promotion to Division 6 next season.

Clevedon's fortunes took a downturn though as the 1st team travelled to Cleeve Hill only to end the evening with a 10-0 loss that will see the team finish in 2nd position in the league. The 2nd team travelled to Cotham Park in Bristol and won a tight match 6-4. With the last match of the season being held this Friday, the 2nd team need to pick as many points as possible to avoid relegation from Division 4a.

Clevedon's ladies teams were also in action this week. The A team which consisted of Brenda Plummer, and Shirley Hyde, supported by star juniors Josie Vickers and Lucinda Davidson, played a tough match against Cleeve and came away with a 7-5 defeat. The final match is set to be a 'nail biter'. Clevedon will host the match against current division leaders Bridgwater. The top of Division 2 is incredibly close at the moment and the result of this match will decide Clevedon's fate, there is a still a good chance of promotion.

There were home matches for both the B team and the C team. The B team, Doreen Bailey, Sue Norman, June Forte and Lucy Turner, produced a convincing win of 8-3 over Winscombe. A credible win is needed in their final match against current leaders Wedmore to secure their place in Division 3 next season.

The C team suffered another defeat in Division 7 although they managed to win one rubber, the final score was an 8-3 victory for Weston. Sarah Brown, Katie Williams, Mandy Vickers and club patron Margaret Dyer played the C team match. They will end the season as the bottom of Division 6 and will be relegation to Division 7 next season.

The C team has struggled in Division 6 this season partly due to the fact that the teams are made up of a large number of players experiencing competitive play for the first time. The enduring enthusiasm and commitment to the matches shown by all of the players has been superb and the C team is certain to see some more encouraging results next season.

In the Avon league things are looking good for Clevedon. Playing against Cleeve Hill,Katrina Rolfe and Josie Vickers won both of their rubbers easily while Margaret Dyer and Lucinda Davidson had two rather lengthy rubbers with the final result being a victory in the first but the second going to three sets and eventually resulting in defeat. The final score though was a win for Clevedon 8-2. Clevedon are the current leaders in Division 4a. The final match against Thornbury on Friday will determine whether they end the season at the top of the division and ensure promotion into Division 3b.
