Clevedon 12 Newton Abbot 19EARLIER in the season Clevedon lost 75-0 at Newton Abbott. This time Newton were lucky to go away with a win. Clevedon attacked from the first whistle and scored with an early with a try by Matthew Harris after good work by the Clevedon scrum and swift passing by the Clevedon backs. Clevedon, playing good rugby, still have the tendency to kick the ball away badly, especially in a one to one situation. A few missed tackles let in the visitors for a soft try. They increased their lead with a penalty to lead 8-5 at half time. The Clevedon line-out again worked well with Ben Chase and Roger Birkin dominating. The second half saw Newton kick another penalty. Clevedon did not panic and on three occasions near the visitors line should have scored tries. Eventually they did score a try in the corner through Nick Hudson. Steve Johnson converted from the touch line to put Clevedon back in front. The back row of Russell, Shpoland and Birkin played well as a unit. The old warhorse John Pearce, having been resurrected, grafted in the powerhouse. Newton regained the lead with yet another penalty. Clevedon could have snatched victory but seemed to be reluctant to move the ball along the line as they did in the first minute. Near the end Newton's No 8 went over for a try. A good spirited effort but things are improving.Next week, Clevedon are at home to Yatton, kick off 2.30pm.
