TABLE TENNIS - IN the Weston and District Table Tennis League, Division 2 C & C Cobras and Winsc Warriors enjoyed a close match, which was level after the singles and decided by the doubles.

IN the Weston and District Table Tennis League, Division 2 C & C Cobras and Winsc Warriors enjoyed a close match, which was level after the singles and decided by the doubles.

Rick Hutchinson, the only player winning all three singles, lost one game to Warriors' Dave Parker. Cath Smith had exciting and tight matches against Cobras' Andrea Monk in the fifth game. Monk had Paul Millward 10-6 down in the second and third legs, but could not see out either game, going down 3-1. Cobras' Hutchinson and Barker just edged out Smith and Dave Parker in the doubles 3-1 and take the match 20-18.

Another match where the overall result does not show the close games which took place was between Warriors and Division 2 league leaders Totterdown Daemons. Anne Baker was unlucky to lose in four to Daemons' Mike Summers, but fought back to beat Paul Harding 12-10 in the fifth. Bert Hiscock was his usual brilliant self for Daemons. Baker and Dave Parker made a late surge to triumph 3-2 in the doubles over Summers and Harding, Daemons won the match 25-11.

Two wins for Walton Village, the first against Totterdown Flamingos even though Flamingos' Graham Cheeseman was the only player with three wins. Cheeseman was pushed hard to five games by Andrew Paisey and conceded one to Matt Fligelstone. A 3-1 doubles gave Walton the match 21-15.

Another close match saw Walton scrape home by three points, secured by Matt Fligelstone and Mike Elliott against Rookery Rooks Kiem Mu and Ian Clapp. Clapp took all three for the Rooks with Mu winning two. Walton won 19-16.

Winsc Wayfarers' Rich Parker and Phil Yates could not do much against Bill Bruton, Keith Andrews and Dave Grounsell, both of the Wayfarers had close games against Ambrose, and in the doubles they lost in four games. Wanderers won 10-0.

In Wanderers' match v Winsc Rebels, Karen Wakefield and Bill Bruton had a tough contest before emerging with three wins each. Wakefield needing all five against Dave Hunt and Mike Baker. Bruton had his hardest match against Rob Hansen. Baker and Hunt both defeated Ambrose. Some consolation for Rebels with a win in five for Baker and Hunt over Ambrose and Bruton. Wanderers won the match 7-3.

A better result for Rebels when they had a 7-3 win over Vets B. Dave Hunt claimed three singles, though pushed to four games by Vets' Jon Codd and Darren Clapp, John Pollard had a close second game against him just losing 14-16. Codd and Clapp were the stronger two in the doubles with a 3-0 win over Baker and Rob Hansen.

Bill Bruton of Walton Wanderers commented on the superb three straight singles wins achieved by Barry Lewis of Totterdown Revolutions; a close 8, 9 and 10 against Bruton and 11-13 against Vic Davies. Bruton won in three against Neil Clements but needed five against Steve Charlton. Ambrose added one beating Charlton in five. Revolutions the surprise team of the season won 7-3.

Totterdown C are relishing the challenge of Division 1 and improving with every match had a competitive match against Vets A. Totterdown's Mike Cross gave Roger Crump a stiff test, pushing him to five games and just lost out to Ann Sandford also in five. Peter Butterworth won all his singles for Vets, Mark Price taking one game. Price and Garry Chell both beat Sandford. Vets won the match 8-2.
