Both Weston Swimming Club captain, Evan and James King, took part at the British Swimming Championships.

Weston Swimming Club captains, Evan and James King, both took part in the British Swimming Championships, the highest level of domestic competition in the sport.

This time last year, in Glasgow, the championships served as Team GB’s Olympic trials. In 2017, in Sheffield, places were up for grabs for the world championships in Budapest and a raft of junior European and World competitions.

Last year, Evan King was Weston’s sole representative; this year, she was joined by fellow club captain James King.

Both were cheered on by a group of club swimmers who also met a number of the sport’s stars, including Olympians Adam Peaty, Jazz Carlin, James Guy, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Hannah Miley, Aimee Willmott and Cameron Kurle.

Having qualified for the championships in mid-March with a super swim of 30.62 seconds in the 50m breaststroke at the Millfield Super Series Meet, James swam brilliantly to touch in a personal best time of 30.27 and win his heat.

In the overall 15-18 age group, he finished 15th of 40 competitors, with nine of those swimmers a year older than himself. The time places James 16th in the current 50m rankings for entry into this summer’s British Summer Championships with a month left of the qualifying window.

Making her final swim under the Weston banner before heading off to the US to Purdue University, Evan qualified for her beloved 200m butterfly event.

Her morning heat swim of 2.16.73 positioned her 16th in the entire field and secured a place in the evening Target Tokyo final for swimmers born in 1997-1999.

In the final, Evan touched just outside her heat time to record fifth position. Her morning swim places Evan in seventh place in the GB rankings for her age group in the qualifying window for British Summer Championships.
