Playing his first ever league match, Cobras’ Mark Treasure had three hard fought matches, winning one against Rick Hutchinson in five, but losing narrowly to John Barker in four and in a close finish, a 10-12 defeat to Simon Thomas in the fifth.

Barker lost both his other contests 5-11 in the fifth game to Vets C’s John Barcham and Tony Chedgy. A tight doubles won 3-2 by Hutchinson and Barker against Barcham and Treasure gave Cobras a 24-18 winning score.

Vets C’s match experience stood them in good stead against C & C Banwell’s young team, John Barcham winning all three singles without losing a game. Roger Norville with two, lost to Max Jeremiah in five tough games. Jeremiah and Hannah Cope also beat Mark Treasure in five and four games. Vets won the match 26-9.

Winsc Warriors, despite having a full team were unable to hang on to their nine point advantage against Winsc Wayfarers’ Phil Yates and Simon Kneeshaw came away with nine points each plus the doubles. Warriors’ Dave Parker won one game from Kneeshaw. Wayfarers won 21-10.

In Division 1, two closely matched Winscombe teams, Rebels and Renegades enjoyed a close match, with Renegades keeping their lead at the doubles to win 6-4. Renegades’ Gary Cattermole was in a class of his own taking all three, though with close games against Rob Hansen.

He also lost games to Mike Baker and Dave Hunt. Despite their three point advantage against the two-man team of Walton Wanderers, Winsc Renegades were made to work hard.

Richard Parker and Trevor Jones lost out to Wanderers’ Ray Jenkins and Brian Pearson, but Gary Cattermole won both of his though needing all five against Jenkins. He and Jones won the doubles 3-2 to take the match 6-4.

Wanderers fared better with a full complement beating Vets A 8-2 though the score line didn’t reflect the competitive matches. Walton’s Hawking was undefeated though with one game lost to Roger Crump. Mike Harris fell to Colin Lewis, Brian Pearson found Peter Butterworth too strong losing 7-11 in the fifth. The doubles also went to five, Pearson and Harris narrowly beating Lewis and Butterworth.
