WESTON Colts progressed into the next round of the National Plate with this hard fought victory over their Bristolian hosts.

Weston started much the brighter with a powerful platform at the scrummage through the beefy front row of props Jake Whatley and Chris Smith, allied to hooker James Disney.

It was Disney who opened the scoring when he powered over after a forward drive, centre George Kimmins converted. Kimmins then broke through twice on strong runs only to be denied by the home defence.

However, Weston added to their lead when No 8 Lewis Hancock was on the end of a fine handling move to touch down, which was converted by Kimmins. This seemed to stir the hosts into action and they cut the deficit with a try and when they scored again on the stroke of half-time.

It looked as though Weston’s dominance was going to be severely tested, especially when the hosts scored two tries in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, one of which was converted to put them eight points clear.

With St Marys once again on the offensive, a long pass was intercepted on the 20 metre line by outside centre Oliver Caton, who sprinted the length of the field to just beat the covering defenders to the line for a try, which was again converted by Kimmins.

This score seemed to take the wind out of the hosts’ sails and Weston began to find holes in the St Marys defence and it was fittingly Disney who scored the winning try, converted by Kimmins, which proved to be the final score.

A great performance by the lads, led well by lock Fraser Luxon, impressive flankers Sam and Adam Fisher giving 100 per cent throughout, allied to the combative skills of Hancock, it was scrum-half Dan Lomax, who kicked the ball dead to put Weston into the next round.
