HORNETS Colts continued their unbeaten start to the season with a fourth Somerset League victory over third placed Wiveliscombe at Hutton Moor.
From the kick off, an early mistake gave the Wivelsicombe fly-half an easy three points and five minutes later, another Hornets indiscretion saw them six points behind.
With Wivvy gaining confidence, Hornets were a little fortunate to score an interception try from Greg White against the run of play and quick thinking by James Collings with a quick tap penalty, allowed Rhys Matson to canter over for his first try for a 12-6 lead.
To Wivvy’s credit, their tenacious pack created sufficient pressure for their fly-half to slot two further penalties to tie the scores before half-time at 12-12.
The Hornets pack started the second half with more urgency and it wasn’t long before the scoreboard was troubled.
With Dexter Nettleton, Sam Holland and Sean Davidson in the vanguard, prop Courtney Harris first strolled over after a succession of quick rucks and Rhys Matson added a second shortly after. With Reece Watson adding the extras, Hornets now had some daylight at 24-12.
With the game now opening up and the Hornets pack generating some good ball, they started to increase the tempo of the game and scored three superb long range tries from Alex Griffith, Jo Keating and James Leatherby - all improved by Watson to finish 45-12 victors.
