HORNETS Colts entertained Taunton Colts in the top of the table clash between the Somerset Colts Leagues’ only unbeaten sides and triumphed 28-7 scoring four tries to one.

Hornets fielded a much-changed side from the one that started the national cup match the previous week. Only six of those players started, with four of those making positional changes.

Neither side seemed to be able to get going, Hornets tried to move the ball wide, but tended to over elaborate the final pass, while Taunton seemed to be intent on playing 10 man rugby and trying to use the prevailing wind.

Hornets were first to score when after 10 minutes full-back Tom Bradley went over following a scrum. Reece Watson added the conversion. The next score did not come until the 33rd minute when Bradley scored a second following a run down the right wing in which he shrugged off several attempted tackles to score under the posts. Watson made it 14-0 at half-time.

The second half started brightly when Watson caught the kick-off, made ground before linking with Matt Cornish, who was unable to outpace the defence, but took the two covering defenders out with a sublime back hand pass to Watson to score under the posts, which he then converted.

Hornets scored a fourth try when after a strong break by Hornets resulted in a turn over. When Taunton tried to run the ball, Cornish anticipated the pass and intercepted for a try. Watson completed a 100 per cent day with the boot with a conversion from wide out.

Taunton had their best spell towards the end of the game and with 10 minutes to go, scored a converted try after their forwards powered over following two penalties against Hornets.
