Congresbury’s Justin Yau vows their game at Weston will be “played in the right spirit” and in a “positive manner” to open up the 2021 season.

It’s a far cry from last campaign when cricket was delayed by three months, due to the coronavirus pandemic, but league action is in place to return next month, where Congresbury will begin their Bristol & North Somerset campaign against Twyford House.

And Yau says they can’t wait to get started, saying: “We are really looking forward to the game.

“Weston are always great hosts and the game is always played in the right spirit which will get the season up and running in a positive manner. We just hope it will warm up a bit."

Last season saw both sides play each other at King George V Playing Field and Devonshire Road on consecutive Saturdays in July.

But despite Congresbury coming away with both wins, Yau insists it is not all about the result but being able to play the game again.

And Congresbury’s line-up will be made up mainly from players in the first team but there may be a couple of players from their seconds involved this Saturday.

“I think we are just grateful that we are going to be able to play," added Yau.

"It’s going to be really strange to play in the league format again and we can’t wait to get going. We will go into each game giving everything and hopefully we can have a successful season.

“I don’t think winning is the most important thing in pre-season games.

“Most crucially, it’s for players to get match practice and get into good habits in preparation for the long season ahead. Having missed out on pre season indoor nets, it’s important we hit the ground running.”

As for Yau, he will once again lead the side following his move from Torquay as player-coach in 2018.

He said: “It’s always an honour to captain such a great club. All the support stems from the top with excellent support from our committee. We are in a great position as a club and hopefully we can continue the journey to get us to the next level over the next few years.”
