BADMINTON - UPHILL Badminton Clubs B, C and E teams were in action this week and all won convincingly.

The B team were playing at home to Wyvern B in Division 2 of the North Somerset League and won a competitive match by six rubbers to three.

The team of Teresa Davison, Wai Cheung, Christy Langford, Brian Hadley, Denise Burton (captain) and Rob Morray all played well. Only one of the rubbers went to three games and that was won by Uphill.

The evening started well for Uphill as they won two of the three mixed rubbers and this was further improved as Teresa, Christy and Denise proved too strong for the Wyvern ladies, winning all the ladies rubbers with ease.

The men's rubbers proved far more competitive with Ross Maclennan and Antony Forster beating Wai and Brian 19-21, 8-21 in the first. Wai and Rob then fought hard in the second rubber after losing the first game 13-21, they came back to beat Maclennan and Clive Wood 21-18, 21-17. Wyvern then hit back to take the last rubber with Forster and Wood beating Brian and Rob 14-21, 18-21.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Christy Langford and Denise Burton of Uphill with good support from Teresa, Brian and Rob.

This win takes them to the top of the Division having played six, won five got 36 rubbers and 46 points.

The C team were playing away to Nailsea and Backwell B and won by eight rubbers to one. The team of Ruth Harding, Robert Cole, Julie O'Sullivan, Matt Valentine, Maureen Matthews (captain) and Tom Higgins all played well.

In the mixed and men's rubbers, Uphill proved too strong for the opposition and won all their rubbers comfortably. In the more competitive ladies rubbers Ruth and Julie (playing her first match of the season) won the first ladies rubber 15-21, 17-21 and Ruth and Maureen followed this up by beating Joanne Kushner and Jude Little 23-25, 13-21.

The final ladies rubber was close and hard fought, before Emma Bird and Little beat Julie and Maureen 24-22, 21-23, 21-16.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Rob, Matt and Tom from Uphill, with good support from Ruth, Julie and Maureen

The E team, whose players are all junior club members, were playing at home to Winscombe B and won by six rubbers to three. The team of Kate Robinson, Andrew Potts (captain), Emily Walker, Billy Fear, Emily Walker and Sonny Topham all played well and are showing good progress since the start of the season.

This was a good competitive match with three rubbers going to three games and many other games being very close.

Uphill started well, with Kate and Andrew coming back, after losing the first game 17-21 to win the rubber 17-21, 21-5, 21-11. Emily Look and Billy then won a close second mixed 21-13, 19-21, 21-19.

Emily Walker and Sonny Topham won the final mixed 21-19, 21-15. Kate and the two Emily's proved too strong for the opposition ladies and won all their rubbers comfortably.

In the men's rubbers, all the games were close. In the first Andrew and Billy lost to Adrian Moore and Ian Tolley 21-14, 16-21, 23-25.

The second saw Andrew and Sonny lose 16-21, 19-21 to Moore and Anthony Biggs and the final men's was won by Tolley and Biggs of Winscombe 20-22, 19-21 to complete an enjoyable evenings badminton.

The only players to win all their rubbers were Kate Robinson, Emily Look and Emily Walker with good support from Andrew, Billy and Sonny.

The club is also entering 10 members in the 2010 Tough Ten multi-terrain race challenge on February 14, organised by Weston Lions Club.

The race is designed to be within the capabilities of any normally fit runner or jogger and the 10 mile course uses sections of (closed) tarmac road along the seafront and coast, a section of the Promenade, woodland paths and trails within Worlebury Woods, and a little of the beach.
