WESTLAND United Reserves returned to Division 2 action finding themselves in a relegation dogfight.

After a nervous few opening exchanges, it was Westland who took control when a great move resulted in winger Nick Bond crossing for Jack Riney to loop a header goal into the net.

It was Bond who nearly made it two when he was played in by lone striker Matthew Bazell, only to find his shot well saved by the keeper.

A lapse in concentration saw Nailsea net the equaliser just before the break. It could have been worse, had it not been for stand-in keeper Paul Wray, who made a superb one-on-one save.

Westland came out flying in the second period and midfielder Nick Crocker restored the home side’s lead with a well-taken goal. United were caught on the break and the visiting striker equalised for a second time.

Head coach Neil Keeling sent on James Cooper to win the game, and he did not take long to make an impact. A great through ball by Alex Reid found Cooper, who rounded the keeper to score the winner.

Westland had to weather the storm in the closing stages as Nailsea searched for an equaliser, but the back four of Sharp, Reid, Russ and Trotter held firm to see out the victory.

This week’s Farrons estate agents man of the match went to captain Nick Crocker.

Westend 2 Wrington Redhill 0

A FREEZING day in Weston set the scene for this Division 4 encounter.

The hard pitch ensured both sides struggled to get full control of the ball as it bounced around the pitch. The first meaningful shot of the game came from Wrington. Westend keeper Mark Rawlins saw it late and tipped the ball wide. Rawlins kept Westend in the game with a fine save from the resulting corner.

Westend took the lead when a free kick from halfway taken by Ross Killcoyne split the Wrington defence and Ian Wakenshaw volleyed into the top corner.

The second goal soon followed as Killcoyne won a free kick and played it quickly down the wing to Mike Smith, who crossed to Wakenshaw. His shot rebounded to Dave White to tap into an empty net.

Wrington came on strongly in the second half, and excellent work from Bianca Jones in midfield and Tony Wilmott in defence, kept them at bay.

The game became stretched as chances fell to both sides, but Wrington could not score a goal their hard work deserved. Man of the match went to Ross Killcoyne.

Weston Players 3

Worle Rangers 2

AFTER last week’s narrow cup defeat, Worle were keen to make amends against the Division 6 league leaders

Worle dominated the early period with driving runs from Liam Willment, Jamie Ingersent and Chris Brinson. Worle missed some good chances and a scrappy Players’ goal after a save from Nathan Royce, meant that Worle went in at half-time a goal down.

After the interval, Worle needed the back four to be on their guard, John Imrie excelling at centre back. With a change in formation, Worle took the game to Players and two quick goals from the hard working Adam Brown was just reward.

However, Players were not finished and a fluke cross, which looped over Royce for 2-2 only served to inspire Players. With less than five minutes left, Players converted a penalty and stole the points.

The Curry Garden man of the match went to John Imrie.
