An excellent fifth wicket partnership between Shabel Ahmed and Patrick Howes took Weston to a winning position against Minehead.
Weston produced a sensational recovery to maintain their position at the top away at Minehead.
After electing to bat, rain delayed the start and reduced it to 35 overs per side. Minehead got off to an incredible start with Darren Sherring removing Andy Fear and Ryan Davies in his first over both caught behind.
In his second over he found the edge twice more with Simon Green and Chris Davidson following, leaving Weston staring down the barrel at 2-4. With the bowlers finding movement Shabel Ahmed and Paddy Howes dug in and helped give the scorecard some respectability.
Howes took the attack to the bowlers and before long a 100 partnership had given Weston hope of a competitive total. Howes eventually fell for 54, but Rob Turner continued where he left off with a quick 31. Late boundaries from the tail and Ahmed took Weston to 195, with Ahmed 64 not out and the momentum back with Weston.
Further rain at tea reduced Minehead’s innings to 29 overs and a target of 175. Tom Chambers took two early wickets including the dangerous Buchanan before Charl Willoughby had Muggeridge held at slip by Green.
In an effort to get through quick overs with rain in the air, Weston turned to the spin of Ashley Allen and Howes and the pair claimed five wickets between them to ensure Minehead were never able to stay in the chase.
Willoughby picked up a second wicket towards the end and despite Howes getting a wicket in the final over, Minehead closed on 126-9.
This was the first time in a while Weston have been under serious pressure in a game and the response by Howes and Ahmed, as well as an exceptional bowling and fielding display will provide the team with confidence as they aim to push on their promotion hopes.
