Belvedere recorded a dramatic victory over Wellington.

BELVEDERE faced third-placed Wellington, knowing a win was essential if they were to get themselves back in with a chance of avoiding relegation.

Having lost the toss again, Belvedere were asked to bat first and were soon in trouble as the accurate Trott had Chadwick caught at deep fine leg. Trott’s fine spell of bowling also claimed Seale and Gadd.

Cornish soon perished, leaving the home side in trouble at 42-4. Crockett was next to go and was soon followed by Jones. With Belvedere Struggling at 61-6 Ashfield (26) counter attacked with a breezy innings.

When he was out McCrea (22) joined Watts (15) and put together what turned out to be a vital 30 run partnership as the home side scrambled to 111 all out.

With seven overs to be bowled before tea, Belvedere applied early pressure, Hosey and Cornish conceding only two runs.

After tea, Belvedere soon claimed early wickets as Hosey and Cornish bowled well, leaving the visitors at 23-3. A partnership between Sparks and Davies threatened to take the game away from Belvedere, but things changed in dramatic fashion.

From 47-3, Wellington were skittled out for 56 as Cornish (5-32) ran through the visitor’s middle order.

Spinner Taylor (2-9) joined the party clean bowling Davies and taking a return catch to dismiss Trott. The final dismissal came from a great piece of fielding by Ashfield who ran out Davey, leaving Belvedere victors by 55 runs.

In a fantastic team performance, Belvedere picked up 30 valuable points. Watts, Ashfield and McCrea took the batting plaudits, but the Buildbase man of the match went to Matt Cornish.

■ After being asked to bat first by Huntspill, Belvedere A batted patiently in the testing conditions before Hind lost his wicket with the score on 29.

Wigg soon followed unfortunately as the ball hit his body and trickled on to the stumps. This brought Lodge to the wicket who hit a brisk 15, followed by Toby Brees who scored 13.

Mike Long was still at the other end and made a well-deserved 54, which held the innings together and Belvedere finished on 135-9.

Scoring runs proved difficult for the Huntspill batting as Davis (10-5-11-2) and Fairhurst (12-4-22-3) bowled a tight and excellent opening spell. Lodge (7-0-19-2) and Sam Jennings (6-0-9-2) continued Huntspill’s woes and their innings ended when Jack Neville ran out the last batsmen to end their innings on 69.

Special mention to the whole team, who showed enthusiasm throughout the game. Buildbase man of the match was Mike Long.
