Cricket : Weston V Bath. John Williams.

A magnificent innings of 172 by John Williams was not enough for victory as Weston lost off the last ball.

WESTON 1st XI’s promotion push was halted after an extraordinary game of cricket away at Goatacre on Saturday.

Skipper Adam Davies won the toss and elected to bat first. Weston were under the cosh early on after opening batsman Andrew Fear was removed and then closely followed by Rob Turner, leaving Weston languishing at 32-3.

This brought John Williams to the crease. He took his time to assess conditions and bring stability back to the innings. Once settled, Williams took the fight back to the Goatacre attack and played some excellent shots.

Williams grew in confidence and was making batting look easy and he continued to dispatch the bowling to all parts. The Goatacre bowlers had no answer and he reached his century with plenty of time still left in the innings.

He then cut loose and went into overdrive and was eventually dismissed for a magnificent 172 from 122 balls including 16 fours and 13 sixes.

He was supported by Chris Davidson (32), Sam Trego (25) and John Davidson (29) as the Weston innings finished on 314 all out.

Goatacre’s reply got off to a poor start after Tom Main removed Ed Kilbee caught behind and Andrew Fear accounted for Ed Wilkins and Goatacre were 33-2. However, Gloucestershire batsman Will Gidman was still at the crease and looking increasingly dangerous.

He took the score to 149 before he holed out to Tom Main at long-off and at this point Weston looked to have the game under control.

This brought Jonathan Wilkins to the crease who started slowly, but then became increasingly comfortable and began to play some extraordinary shots to keep Goatacre in the contest.

He batted extremely well, but Weston kept taking wickets at the other end and when Wilkins was joined by Gibbens with the score on 252, Weston only needed one wicket to win the game.

Wilkins had other ideas and it seemed that wherever the bowlers put it, Wilkins was smashing it to all parts. Wilkins batted all the way through and saw Goatacre home off the last ball of the innings finishing on 116 not out off 85 balls.
