SOMERSET County cricketer Peter Trego finished his LV= County Championship season on a high by taking his 50th wicket for the first time in his county championship career.

Trego took the all important 50th wicket during Somerset’s final game against Worcestershire at Taunton, dismissing Phil Hughes for four.

Trego and Somerset closed their season in style, beating the visitors by an innings and 148 runs with a day to spare. The win meant Somerset finished runners-up in Division 1, just behind the champions Warwickshire.

In a season that has seen the club affected by some unfortunate injuries, the Somerset all-rounder has been a key figure in the club’s 2012 campaign, posting 600 runs to compliment his 50 wicket haul.

On taking his 50th wicket, Peter said: “It has been a difficult season at times, so to come away with 50 wickets to my name is something to be proud of. It really has been a strong team effort this year and I am really happy with my contribution. To take the wicket at home and in the last game of the season is a real bonus.”

Trego has also been named county cricket’s most valuable player for the 2012 season.

It is the third time in four years the award has been handed to a Somerset player, following captain Marcus Trescothick’s success in 2009 and 2011. Trego notched 897 runs and took 67 wickets in all competitions this term.

The all-rounder has signed to play for Central Districts in New Zealand for two months during the winter and also hopes to be involved in the Bangladesh Premier League.
