Weston made a fine start to the new season with a comfortable victory at Wellington.
Weston first XI got off to a great start to the season away at Wellington, winning by 74 runs.
Having lost the toss and been put into bat, openers Simon Green and Andrew Fear put on a solid opening partnership of 81 before Fear was trapped lbw for 46 in the 21st over.
Green pushed on in partnership with Jack Press before being bowled for 45. This brought Somerset keeper Ryan Davies to the crease and a quick fire 61 off 38 balls, containing some outstanding shots to all parts of the ground, ensued.
Chris Davidson contributed well in a partnership of 62 for the fifth wicket with Davies. Once Davies was out in the 46th over with the score on 207, wickets tumbled as Weston strove to reach 225 for the extra batting point. This was achieved with two balls to go, before Tom Chambers was run out on the last ball to give Weston a score of 227 all out.
Wellington came into bat under pressure to chase the runs and opening bowlers Charl Willoughby (8-2-17-1) and Chambers kept this pressure on. Chambers struck to remove the openers Hine, bowled for a duck in the second over, and Campbell, superbly caught by Jamie Howson, for 14 in the eighth over.
Despite resistance from Sparks (54), Ash Allen (9-2-32-2) and Davidson (5-0-22-1) wiped out the middle order, with Green taking an outstanding one-handed diving catch at short cover.
Chambers came back on in the 40th over to clean up the tail, ending up with figures of 8-1-26-5 and leaving Wellington all out for 153 in the 44th over.
Weston will be buoyed by this superb start to the season, with some excellent performances from so many players, as they head towards their first home match this coming weekend.
The Forte Financial man of the match was Tom Chambers.
