WESTON lost their unbeaten record with a heavy defeat to second-placed Taunton Deane.

Deane chose to bat first and Woodman and Somerset’s Chris Jones put on 156 for the first wicket. Despite some good bowling at times, the pair brutally punished every mistake.

With the bowlers let down by dropped catches and misfields, pressure was difficult to apply. Tom Court finally removed Woodman caught behind for 72. Jones continued his onslaught by bringing up his 100.

Andy Fear (10-0-41-1) removed Tweddle before Main came back to bowl Jones for 152. Two more wickets for Main limited the final few overs of scoring, but Deane finished on 332-5.

Weston’s reply stuttered and at the 20 over mark they were reeling on 93-6. This brought first team debutant Carl Fletcher to the crease and he and the patient Matt Kearsey helped take Weston past 120 and in turn preventing Deane from two bonus points.

Kearsey and Main went quickly and at 155-8 Weston were in danger of picking up few points from the game. Ash Allen joined Fletcher and both began picking up regular boundaries.

Fletcher brought up his half century from as many balls and a few Allen boundaries saw Weston to 200. With four overs to go, the pair took Weston past 225 and maximum batting points before responsibly seeing out the remaining overs to prevent Deane scoring a fifth bowling point.

Fletcher finished with an excellent 76 not out and Allen with his highest 1st XI score of 33 not out.

This was lacklustre performance from Weston, but the excellent 73-run partnership helped ensure Deane did not gain maximum points that they would have expected at one stage.

IntouchCRM man of the match for a superb debut innings went to Carl Fletcher.
