Uphill Castle opened the new season with victory and a narrow defeat to Blagdon.

Uphill Castle Under-11s won their first home fixture, beating Backwell Flax Bourton by 14 runs.

Put into bat Uphill made 265-6 (Barrington). Chief contributors were Joe O’Neill (19 net 13), Myles Bliss (8*), with Charlie Huke (9 net 3) and Gerared King (8 net 2) each finding the boundary.

In reply, the visitors were pegged back by early wickets from Gerard King (1-10) and William Bamsey (2-13). There were also excellent spells from Cooper Boyd with 1-17 from four overs and skipper Myles Bliss whose four overs yielded only five runs, and included a match-clinching run out as Backwell closed on 251-5.

The Uphill player of the match award went to Myles Bliss.

The Under-11s narrowly lost their first match of the season at Blagdon. It was a nail-biting climax as Blagdon snatched two wickets in the final over to wrest an unlikely victory.

Fielding first, Castle struck early blows with wickets for skipper Myles Bliss (1-0) and Cooper Boyd, and a superbly executed run out as Charlie Huke gathered Bliss’s accurate throw, which left Blagdon on 228-3 (Barrington) after four overs.

Further wickets followed for William Bamsey (1-11) and Cooper Boyd (2-12), but with early season rustiness the number of wides and no balls boosted the home score to 269-5. Sam Richley made an excellent 13* for Blagdon.

Uphill’s reply was given the ideal start by Huke (8*) and Bamsey (6*) in making 26-0 in the first four overs. Charlie Beal made 4* and Joe O’Neill struck an excellent 13* with two boundaries.

Bliss and Boyd arrived with 20 required from the final four overs which they reduced to three needed off the last over, but Blagdon took two wickets to snatch victory.

It was a close call for the Uphill player of the match award, but Joe O’Neill just shaded it.
