Weston maintained their position at the top of the WEPL Somerset Division with a six-wicket victory at Staplegrove.

Weston managed to dodge the rain and maintain their position at the top of the WEPL Somerset Divison with a six-wicket victory at Staplegrove.

In a game reduced to 44 overs per side due to rain, Weston had little hesitation in winning the toss and asking their hosts to bat in tricky conditions.

The bowlers made hay as Charl Willoughby, Tom Chambers, Patrick Howes and Chris Davidson all took wickets, despite the best efforts of Paul Oliver who made a good 60 for Staplegrove. The Taunton-based side ended their innings on 148-9.

In reply, Andy Fear (27) and Tom Ford (18) got Weston off to a good start. A burst of wickets through the top order led by Ian Bishop instilled some nerves.

However, with the experience of captain Rob Turner joining Shabel Ahmed, Weston romped home with some comfort in the end, increasing their advantage over second-placed North Perrott who were not able to pick up as many bonus points in their win over Wellington.

Forte Financial man of the match went to Charl Willoughby.

This weekend sees the season’s pivotal game against North Perrott at Devonshire Road, starting at 12.30pm. All spectators are welcomed for the biggest game of the season so far.
