Weston got the new season underway with an excellent victory away at Ilminster.

Weston First XI got off to an excellent start to the new season with an eight-wicket win away at Ilminster.

Having won the toss and elected to bowl, Weston struck early with Tom Chambers removing opener Warry for nine in the second over. Kraucamp and Vickery put on a stand of 55 for the second wicket before Ash Allen came on to bowl and removed Kraucamp for 32.

The run rate slowed considerably as Allen struck at regular intervals, finishing with figures of 10-2-23-4 at the end of his spell. Pete Trego (10-4-30-1) struck in the second over of his second spell to leave Ilminster 96-6 in the 33rd over.

Vickery was well supported by the tail as he reached his 50 off 130 balls. He carried his bat to end up 68 not out as Ilminster reached 155-8 off their 50 overs.

Weston bowled economically, with figures of 10-2-20-0 for Chris Davidson and 6-0-17-1 for Shabil Ahmed. Some superb catches were taken by Chambers, both Davidson brothers and captain Rob Turner as Weston put on a solid display in the field.

Weston’s innings got off to a positive start with Andrew Fear hitting a boundary from the first ball. He was out lbw in the second over, bringing Trego to the crease to partner 16-year-old Jack Press.

Both batted fluently, putting on 87, before Trego was bowled on 49. Press batted maturely with overseas player Ben Gully to reach his 50 in the 29th over. He finished 58 not out with Gully on 31 not out as Weston reached their target on the first ball of the 36th over.

The Forte Financial man of the match was Ash Allen, but special mention must go to Jack Press for a mature batting performance.
