Weston 1st XI remain top of the league after defeating Wellington by 106 runs.

Weston 1st XI continued their winning streak, beating Wellington by 106 runs.

Having elected to bat, Weston amassed 264-3 before declaring after 45 overs. This gave the home side the possibility of gaining an extra two points should they win the game.

The outstanding highlights of the Weston innings came from Andy Fear (100) and Ryan Davies (106 not out). This is back-to-back hundreds for these two players having both scored centuries in their previous game.

Fear, having missed two weeks for the birth of his baby daughter, seemed to suffer no effects from lack of sleep as he caressed the ball to all parts of the field. In addition, a quickfire 23 from Chris Davidson helped set up the early declaration.

Wellington lost an early wicket to the probing Charl Willoughby, but a partnership of 55 between Hyne and Sparks got them back on track.

Ashley Allen struck a crucial blow and from that point Wellington lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked like threatening Weston’s total. Sparks continued his solid innings and was finally bowled by Davidson for 98.

Allen and Willoughby bowled highly impressively taking three wickets each with Shabel Ahmed and Paddy Howes the other wicket-takers. Quality catches from John Davidson and Howes also contributed to Wellington’s downfall as their innings ended on 158.

Weston increased their points gap on second-placed North Perrott to 11 and go into Saturday’s game away at Minehead looking to further solidify top spot. With only one team promoted, it promises to be a tense and exciting run-in to the end of the season.

Forte Financial man of the match was Andy Fear. He managed to push the run rate up as he accelerated from 50 to 100, enabling Weston to gain the important two extra points from this game.
