Winscombe travelled to league leaders Shapwick and Polden for a crucial promotion clash in damp conditions.

In a reduced-overs game, Winscombe won the toss and took early wickets, with Chris Clough (3-61) taking the important wicket of Smith for one. Polden rebuilt slowly but Jory Cureton (1-23) and Tom Hall (1-28) took further wickets.

As usual, the excellent Matt Lunn (1-18 in eight overs) confounded the batsmen with his accuracy and the home side were only able to add a late burst of runs to reach 161-6.

In reply, Winscombe lost early wickets to the unpredictable surface, but the reliable Michael Hayes (34 not out) and Rob Bradley (54 not out) batted with skill and composure to take Winscombe to their total, aided by an astonishing 59 wides from the home side’s bowlers.

In reaching their total with more than 11 overs to spare, Winscombe narrowed the gap at the top of the table to just 12 points.
