WESTON Judo Club took nine players to the Bedminster Judokwai Junior Open contest at Ashton Gate, Bristol.

For six of them it was their first time in Judo combat, and they all performed superbly.

Commenting on their performance, head coach Richard Stevens said: "We are so proud of them. Many of them are fairly new to our club and they have trained really hard to prepare for this contest. The only seasoned player we had on the day was our national medallist and IBC national champion Lele Nairne who is 11; she won the gold in her category, and a silver in the Over-12 year old category where she fought players as much as four years older, and 10 kg heavier than her.

"I have no doubt that in a couple of years many of our young members will be representing themselves to the same outstanding standard."

Results: Lele Nairne, gold and silver; Nicole Karnacola, gold; Jonathan Newton, silver; Bryany Edgell, silver; Tom Llwarch, silver; Nathan Young, silver; Alex Tyler, bronze and bronze x 2; Carter Touches, bronze; Owen Taylor, bronze.

Although the club is nearly full, we still have three memberships available for those interested in taking up an exciting new sport. For a free trial lesson, or to learn more about us, visit the club web site at: www.westonjudoclub.co.uk
