Division cup victory for Banwell

Banwell Reserves won the Vardon Cup after a 3-0 victory over Bournville Rovers.

HIGH-FLYING Banwell Reserves took their league form into the divisional Vardon Cup final with a convincing win over a strong Bournville side.
Banwell had the early possession and chances with veteran forward line Scott McLoud (49) and Stu Miller (44) both going close.

Captain Mark Jones’ threaded ball set Harry Hornigold off free, before his pin-point cross found McLoud who sidefooted past the stranded keeper.
Paul Marsh was busy down Bournville’s left wing, getting crosses into the Banwell box where Dave Purkis had to be at his best on several occasions. Sam Perrett’s last-gasp goal-line clearance kept Bournville at bay.

Jones went close to extending Banwell’s lead on two occasions, being assisted by Mark McKeever and Russell Mitchell.
Hornigold was rewarded with Banwell’s second after chasing down a ball which the keeper misjudged, allowing Hornigold to tap into an empty net.
Bournville started the second half the brighter side putting Banwell’s back line of Purkis, Pennington, Marquis, Perrett and Lucas under pressure.
The third and decisive goal was the goal of the game when Miller latched on to a Purkis goal kick and used his experience to beat his marker before firing into the roof of the net from 25 yards.
Bournville skipper Rob Tyson summed up Bournville’s afternoon by missing a late penalty.
Special mention to the four officials, who were superb. Autosmart man of the match was James Lucas.
