FOLLOWING the success of the 2010 Weston national water ski race, Weston Bay Watersports Club are proud to announce that they will be running the final round of the eight race series on Saturday.

Over 30 ski race boats will be competing on the day with speeds in excess of 95 miles per hour being achieved if the water conditions are flat. The first race will start at 10am with the children’s race, followed by the main race at 10.45am and the support race at 12noon.

Competitors from all over the UK will be competing and it is also hoped that several teams from Europe will be in attendance.

Weston Bay Watersports Club are running the event in conjunction with North Somerset Council, the Pavilion Bar and the British Water Ski.

Please note the Knightstone slipway will be closed to the general public from 6am on Saturday through to 3pm on Sunday.

Further information is available from Steve Benny on 07736 346250.

THE seventh round of the national waterski championships were held in Stone in Essex.

John Grimes, competing in veteran’s class was amongst a five boat scramble to the first turn in third place. Unfortunately, one engine on their twin 300hp boat kept stalling.

This made it difficult to drive and after two laps of desperately trying to fight it, the team eventually retired.

The main race of 50 minutes saw calmer conditions, but still testing in places. Due to issues with other teams, Chris Preece, racing Formula 3 was the only boat to start the race in his class, meaning all he had to do was finish, also securing him second place in the championships.

This didn’t stop Chris’s team from racing with some of the Formula 2 boats boasting twice the horsepower of their boat and leading from several until the later part of the race.

The finish meant that although Chris cannot win Formula 3 overall, he is guaranteed second place in the standings.
