CHEDDAR held their annual finals day and again demonstrated that tennis spans the generations, with players from under 12 to over 60 competing for trophies.

First up were the Under-12 boys, with Charlie Beake coming out on top. Then followed two close and enthralling encounters, Vanessa Brill beating Jasmine Cornish in the girls' singles and Hal Davidson getting the better of Dudley Patience in the boys' Under-14 singles. Meanwhile Hal's older brother Ben was winning the boys' Under-16 doubles with partner Joel Butcher.

To make it a family affair, in the afternoon their mother Denise contested the ladies' doubles final, eventually losing in three absorbing sets. However, the club's young members continued to steal the limelight, with 15-year-old James Knight beating Mark Rickard in a repeat of last year's men's singles final and going on to win the men's doubles with Sohail Syed. In the longest and most exciting match of the day 12-year-old Amy Rossiter partnered Sohail Syed to victory in the mixed doubles; a three-set thriller which lasted nearly three hours.

Before presenting trophies and prizes to the finalists, club chairman Peter Colton made two special presentations. Dudley Patience received the award for the most improved junior and then club president Len May was presented with the Ace Service Award for exceptional service to the club over many years.

The day was enjoyed by many club members and friends and Susan Bates was thanked for again organising the tournament and providing ploughman's lunches on the day.
