WOODLAND Lawn Tennis Club finished off the summer season in style with its annual club finals day.

Eight matches took place over the course of the afternoon and friends and family turned out to cheer on the competitors.

The first matches were the men singles. In the Chairman’s Cup, left-hander Chris Bond took on the tactical Nick Griffiths and from the outset Chris dominated the play to run out the winner.

The President’s Cup saw 18-year-old Tom Foster take on eight-time winner Jon Treen in a fast-paced final. Despite Tom’s consistency from the back of the court, Jon’s variety of play shone through enabling him to win his ninth title in style.

The ladies’ final between Elaine Edwards and Jenny Purcell was a much closer affair, going to three sets, with Elaine’s consistency of play the decisive factor in the final set and she eventually won 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

The junior finals were next on court with sisters, Stephie and Lydia Buckingham vying for the shield for the fourth year in succession. Stephie’s attacking game and her ability to put the ball away saw her win the title for the third year in succession.

The boy’s final was also a repeat of last year, but proved to be a much tighter affair. Oliver Fuller and Tom Deverson put on a brilliant display of tennis, with Oliver retaining his title.

The afternoon finished with the doubles tournaments. Elaine and partner Claire Norvill, was back facing Jenny, and her partner Frances Ball. This time Jenny and Frances took the lead and their solid forceful play gave them a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Mike Fletcher and Nick Evans put on an impressive performance against Roger Norvill and Ron Purcell in the men’s doubles and they won in straight sets.

The final match of the day was the mixed doubles. Evans and Purcell pitted their mixture of power and touch against Griffiths and Claire Norvill’s consistent and considered play, with Nick and Jenny claiming a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Club chairman Les Treen was delighted by the atmosphere both on and off the court. He said: “It’s lovely seeing so many supporters here, it’s made it a real occasion. We’ve seen some great tennis and everyone has had an enjoyable time.”
