In his weekly address, club captain Martin Green announced that with some favourable weather conditions, the club will trial two of the reworked greens in early February to see how they play.

A decision will be taken if and when these and the remainder of the greens will be able to be opened for play.

There will be an extra Stableford event on January 22 put on by the committee. This a free competition for members, to thank them for their patience, whilst the main greens are undergoing improvement works.

The AGM is scheduled for January 29 at 7.30pm, all members are welcome to attend. This will be followed by the new captain’s drive-in competition the following day.

? GOLFERS at Wedmore were able to return to competitive golf early in the New Year after the snow and ice had postponed several competitions.

Not only that, but play was on the regular greens as well. The competition was a fairly light hearted Bowmaker and to add to the fun, a silly hat competition had been organised by the pro-shop.

Both competitions were closely contested. As far as the golf went, only one point covered the first three teams. Third place went to the team comprising Martin Dunton, Charlie Woodard, Calvon Poulton-Sadler and Ian Robson. Their score of 113 points was equalled by Claire and Tony Biggs and John and Judy Cutter, who claimed second place on countback due to a better back nine.

Just one point ahead was the team of Dom Channon, Geoff Fisher, Martin Wilyman and Rob Davis, who therefore became the first winners of 2011.

The hat competition was judged by assistant professional Carole Pope. In the end she declared three players equal winners. Joan Peck’s Swan Lake, Vera Ireland’s Christmas Cake andTony Phelps’ dog’s Christmas toy.

The frost forced a return to nine winter greens for the January Stableford. The changing conditions seemed to inhibit scoring, but as usual there were exceptions to the rule.

Terry Edwards had a magnificent 41 points to win Division 1, three shots clear of Brad Ruddick, who was a further three shots clear of Keith Thomas.

It was tighter in Division 2. Don Edmondson (40) just beating Charlie Woodard on countback, with John Vowles (38) in third. Best score of the day went to Steve House, whose 43 points won Division 3, ahead of Steve Whitcombe (41) and Tony Wilde(40).

? LEN Young was the first winner of 2011 in Brean Golf Club seniors’ section as he racked up 42 points to win the January Stableford.

His score was four better than anyone else. Pete Douglas beat George Thomas on countback for the runners-up position after they both scored 38 points.

Another senior handed in the best score in the Winter League. Jim McLauchlan totalled 41 points and with it took the honours in Division 2. Captain elect Dave Bradley was again in the frame with his card of 40 taking second spot.

The winner of Division 1 came from the other end of the age range with student Roy Baker successful. His 40 points relegated Ron Vine to second on 39.

The Percy Underwood Trophy involves the pairs being determined by handicap. The highest handicap is paired with the lowest which gives a fairly even field.

The winners this year were a pair of Barry’s in Tucker and Fisher as they combined to score 42 points over the 18 holes. Runners-up spoils went to Mike Hurman and Graham Foy, ahead of Tony Richards and Kevin Davies in third.

Brean’s director of Golf David Haines featured in the prize winners at the first G&S PGA medal of 2011. He carded a one over par 72 to take a share of third spot over the Burnham and Berrow links. Fellow Brean professional Andrew March was also in the top 10 after his 75.
