Shepton Mallet 1st XI 0

WINSCOMBE bounced back with a well-deserved 4-0 win against Shepton Mallet and also had their first clean sheet of the season.

Winscombe’s first goal came just before half-time when great team play ended with Jade Barry slotting home. The next goal came from determined team play in which Winscombe won a short corner and a new routine resulted in Sarah Holland passing to Leanne Gardner to score.

Kate Walker in goal made some great one-on-one saves when Shepton broke, but the tight defence of Caitlin Flood, Juju Miles, Caroline Marsh, Becky Wilshire and newly-wed Charlie Philips (nee Edwards), easily contained the opposition. Winscombe continued to attack and Gabby Richardson scored the third and Kerri Willis slotted home just before the full-time whistle for Winscombe’s fourth.

Winscombe defended well too which allowed the team to keep a clean sheet. Man of the match was Leanne Gardner.

The club would like to congratulate coach Emma Pike on the arrival of her new baby and also Charlie Philips for having played so well following her wedding day celebrations the day before.

Winscombe Ladies 2nd XI 4

Taunton Vale IV 4

A SPIRITED performance concluded in a well-earned draw for the second team. Youngster Hannah Bapty played well in her first league match and linked well with Trudie Lynham. Taunton Vale scored first, but Winscombe equalised from a set piece with Claudia Routhorn-James scoring after Becky Matthews’ shot was saved.

The second half saw the Winscombe back three of Jodie Honor, Kaye Wannerton and Emma Callow starting to gel and linked well with midfielder and captain Vicky Calder.

Unfortunately, Winscombe found themselves behind again, but after a good passage of play by Lynham and Routhorn-James, Matthews was on hand to score. Two more set pieces goals from Taunton and two goals from Routhorn-James ended this end-to-end match.

Winscombe Ladies 3rd XI 2

Fry’s 3rd XI 0

THE 3rd XI started well with Laura Harvey and Helen Sinclair dominating the midfield and took the lead when Emma Whitehead slotted home.

Play continued and it did not take long for Laura Harvey to double the lead. After the break, Gill Harvey, Vicky Look, Amy Cheesborough and Sinclair worked tirelessly throughout the midfield to feed the forward line.

The Winscombe forward line of Vicki Pagett, Alice Sloman and Hannah Hussey all played well and Hussey came close to her opening goal and was the player of the match. Special mentions must go to the back line of Rachel Wallace, Sarah Kempster and Jo Hann.

Winscombe Ladies Hockey Club trains and plays at Hans Price Academy in Weston and has three teams playing league hockey, a development squad and thriving junior section (under-13s).
