First triathlon attempt by Weston pair

James Lucas and Mark Russ from Flo&Co Running Team took part in their first triathlon, despite being non-swimmers before the event.
James Lucas and Mark Russ from Flo&Co Running Team were challenged to take part in the Portishead Try a Tri, which is a shorter version of a full triathlon.
It involved swimming 264 metres, cycling 10 miles and running four kilometres aimed at beginners. Both are runners but non-swimmers.
They went to the local pool regularly, teaching themselves to swim, both had a one-to-one swimming lesson in the week leading up to the event.
At the weekend, they were extremely nervous before starting the event not helped by the weather providing the pair with a backdrop of thunderstorms making for a tough course.
They were ecstatic to complete the event along with 85 competitors, Mark finished 43rd and despite James falling off is bike on the way round, finished 11th and registered the fastest 4k time on the day of 17.14.
James said: “Falling from my bike in the storm was scary but I knew I was ok and just needed to get back on and keep going,” while Mark enthused: “It has been a great event and I can’t wait to improve my swimming, come back and beat my time.”
