WESTON Boxing Club travelled to the Barbarians Rugby Club, Minehead, for the first round of the junior ABA champion-ships.Ian Clark pulled out through illness, so Mitchell McSweeney was left to carry Weston's hopes against Jack Nicholson of Kingswood, who had previously beaten McSweeney.Nicholson opened with confidence and looked stronger in the first round, but McSweeney boxed well in the second and third, but began to tire in the fourth and Nicholson took the decision on points.Eleven-year-old Edward Hillman had his second contest for Weston, having been beaten the previous week by Plymouth opponent Lee Hyde. He faced local boy Alex Barrington, who ploughed forward, but Hillman recorded his first win with some swift combinations throughout the bout.Hillman will next compete at Weston's annual tournament at Hutton Moor on April 1 at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, along with Ian Clark, Mitchell and Lewis McSweeney, Sam Palmer and the club's senior boxers Shane Main, Matthew Martin and heavyweights Wayne Milsom and Steven Bodger.Tickets are £7 in advance or on the door and sponsors' tables are available.
