MEMBERS of Weston Under-18s Football Academy - organised in partnership with the town's college, ended the season with league runners-up medals, having finished six points and 10 goals ahead of rivals Backwell United.A fine second half of the season saw the team, coached by first team regular Mark McKeever, take 28 points from the 36 available, scoring 45 goals in the process.Striker Jason Gustar, who tasted first team action during the season, finished as the league's top scorer with 17 goals, as his side scored more goals than any other team in the division.Defensively the team were outstanding, only champions Odd Down conceded fewer goals. Tom Dancey and Ben Pavey and Jason Clarke started every game of the season. Clarke showed his versatility, as he was outstanding in a variety of outfield positions.Weston's first team manager Frank Gregan was clearly impressed with the youth teams performances, and he rewarded a total of five of the squad - Gustar, Matt Fisher, Craig Herrod, Russ Driver and Tom Dancey with their first team debuts.In addition, youth team captain Craig Mawford has become a regular in the first team, and first year student Mike Hudson has been involved with the senior squad on a number of occasions.The team's success this season was celebrated at a function held in the boardroom at Woodspring Stadium, attended by more than 60 people.The coveted player of the season award was deservedly won by Craig Herrod, whilst awards were also presented to the ever presents and first-team debutants.Youth team secretary Craig Foley expressed his, and the clubs, appreciation and best wishes to the outgoing second year students, and thanked the first year students for their fine contribution during the season.The evening concluded with the presentation of runners-up medals to all the squad, and of a silver salver presented to captain Craig Mawford and coach Mark McKeever.The new season begins in September, pre-season training will start in late July. Everyone connected with Weston Under-18s look forward to next season with great enthusiasm.
