Cheddar victory keeps promotion push on the boil

Cheddar recorded another victory to keep up the pressure on the Toolstation Western League leaders.

Devizes Town 0

Cheddar ramped up the pressure on leaders Chard Town in Division One of the Toolstation Western League with a workmanlike performance.

What was to prove the decisive goal arrived early in the game and it was unfortunate stuff for the side from Wiltshire as a corner caused enough confusion for Peter Archbold to head over his own line.

A fine pass from Stephen Pennington picked out Adam Wright for another decent chance, but Wright’s effort rocketed over the bar. Town responded with two half-chances that very nearly found the target.

After the break, Devizes again went close before a Craig Mawford screamer hit the post for Cheddar.

Adam Jones then struck the bar for the home side and it took a fine save from Mark Henry to keep the scores down, but a deserved win for the Cheesemen.

The man of the match award, kindly sponsored by Wyke Farms, went to veteran Craig Mawford.

On Saturday, Cheddar travel to Longwell Green Sports (3pm). On Tuesday, they welcome Chippenham Park (7.45pm) to Bowdens Park in more Division One action.

Cheddar Reserves maintained their place at the head of Division Three of the Uhlsport Somerset County League with a 2-0 win at Stockwood Green Reserves.

Harold Hughes and Tobias Jones netted for the visitors.

On Saturday, Cheddar host Chew Magna (3pm) in more Division Three action.

Division Three Cheddar A put up a brave fight against Division One Locking Park in the second round of the Weston and District League’s Doug Atwell Memorial Shield before being edged out 2-1.

This Saturday, the A team welcome Berrow Castle A to Sharpham Road (3pm) in Division Three of the Weston and District League.

Cheddar Ladies were edged out 5-4 in a thriller against a visiting Porlock side who were only able to field seven players in Division Two of the Somerset County Women’s League.

Jade Burton (2) and Kristen Cook (2) netted the goals for the home side.

On Sunday, Cheddar Ladies travel to Evercreech (2pm) in more Division Two action.
