CONGRESBURY went out of the Somerset Cup to Westland Sports side after extra time.

The visitors from Yeovil dominated the first-half and took a deserved lead when a poor clearance led to a shot that keeper Danny Bullock could only parry and the loose ball was fired home by an unmarked striker.

Congresbury were more competitive in the second half and almost equalised when Tony Tuckfield rolled the ball into the path of Ben Marsh and his first-time strike crashed into the crossbar and flew wide.

Moments later Mason Gardner saw his long-range effort fly just over the bar with the keeper well beaten. Westlands still looked dangerous on the break and defenders Alex Read, Ollie Clements, Brian Wrigley, Miles Bishop and Dan Pepworth had to play well to prevent them from increasing their lead.

When Tuckfield’s header beat the keeper, but came back off the crossbar, Congresbury could be forgiven for thinking it wasn’t their day. That was until captain Ross Stockhall turned a defender and smashing an unstoppable shot in off the underside of the crossbar to make the score 1-1.

In extra-time, Westlands were the better side, though Seb Williams came close to giving Congresbury the lead when his cross came back off the inside of the post.

Westlands scored the winner with a carbon copy of their first goal, a defensive error leading to a shot that keeper Bullock could not hold and an unmarked striker fired the ball into an empty net.

Tincknells player of the match was Alex Read.
