Weston St John's 0 Longwell Green 3SAINTS can feel a little aggrieved that another three points slipped through their fingers after two second half defensive slips allowed Longwell Green to gain a victory in a game which the home had held the upper hand for long periods.Saints gave a debut to Luke Purnell, a midweek capture from Toolstation rivals Biddestone, but the young keeper hardly touched the ball during the opening 45 minutes as the home side took full advantage of the conditions to pen Longwell in their own half. Rob Salmon went the closest with a cracking volley from 35 yards which the stranded goalie was grateful to see go inches over. Tom Owen was also in the thick of the action, and the midfielder set up Ross McNab, but his effort went just wide.Even with the windy conditions favouring the visitors, St John's dominance continued after the break, with Greg Turner making some penetrating runs down the left flank.Lee Ludwell was again in fine form, and the striker did exceptionally well to get a shot in from just outside the box, having been surrounded by a number of defenders, only to see the ball crash against the upright. Minutes later, McNab beat the offside trap, and although through on goal with only the keeper to beat, he managed to squeeze his attempt just the wrong side of the post. With the Saints still well on top, disaster struck on the hour, when a back pass by Dave Wilcox took a nasty bobble as Purnell attempted to clear, and the unfortunate air kick allowed Ryan Gardner the easiest of goals as he tapped in from a yard out. Within five minutes, Longwell had totally turned the game on its head as they doubled their lead from the penalty spot. Wilcox was again involved as he upended Gardner with a mistimed challenge, and Mark Cooper completed the job with the spot kick. There was no way back for the luckless Saints, although Ludwell again went close after an exhilarating run which took him past five defenders from the halfway line to inside the box. The scoring was completed in the 80th minute when a cross shot by Mat Gunstone evaded everyone and ended up in the back of the net.Weston Academy player Dave Thorne was also given his debut, and did well after coming off the bench for Rich Powell.
