KEWSTOKE marched into the quarter-final of the Somerset Junior Cup with a tremendous win over Highbridge Town, who had only lost once before this season.
This game could have easily have been called off but for the hard work put in by players and committee members before kick-off to clear the pitch of surface water.
Kewstoke started the stronger with a few early shots that tested the keeper, but it was not long before Highbridge started to pass the ball around. With both teams trying to play football on a wet surface it was a good game to watch.
Ash Brewer and Ben Westgarth combined well down the left to create the half's one good chance, only for the Highbridge keeper to make a fine save to keep the score nil-nil at half time.
The second half started much the same, but as legs began to tire gaps began to appear. Kewstoke pushed hard to score, having changed formation and bringing on Callum Thompson and Alex Chatterly, but Highbridge looked dangerous on the counter attack, with the post coming to Kewstoke's rescue.
As the half came to an end, Kewstoke looked dangerous with Thompson and Baird combing well down the right.
Going into extra time Kewstoke pressed hard for a winning goal. But so did Highbridge, hitting the crossbar with a fine effort from distance.
Just as the management team of Scott Thompson and Nic Blake were picking their penalty takers, Leon Brueford popped up with an overhead kick from a corner to put Kewstoke ahead.
Highbridge had no choice but to press hard in the last five minutes, with Alex Blake making two fine saves, they hung on to complete a fine victory.
Kewstoke's back five were immense, but the Mike Warburton man of the match goes to the referee who had a great game.

East Worle Res 1
PLAYING their first game since Christmas, East must take consolation in defeat from the performances of their three debutants, Ryan Jones, Harry Wall and Batyr Haydorv.
The sloping bumpy pitch did nothing to assist either side, but Clevedon looked threatening through the middle, while East caused Clevedon most problems on the left hand side with Connor Pearson finding and creating space for others.
It was from such a passage of play on 30 minutes which led to a long throw from Tom Hall, the ball fell to Pennington who turned to score. East did not hold on to the lead for long though, when a free kick from 25 yards deceived Murray.
The second half began well, Harry Wall came on for Josh Pearson. East held the most territory, several times the ball bounced awkwardly around the Clevedon goalmouth without the finishing touch being applied.
With 30 minutes to go Haydorv made his debut for the tiring Connor Pearson, and made an immediate impact with a crunching midfield tackle and settled in at right back straight away.
A lapse of concentration changed the game when a goal-bound header from a Clevedon corner crept in beyond Murray's fingertips.
The game was then put beyond doubt when Green tripped a Clevedon forward in the box in the 80th minute. Murray saved the penalty but could stop the follow up.
East Worle man of match was captain Andy Green.
