DIVISION 5 Players advanced to the semi-finals of the Atwell Shield, despite a nervy last 15 minutes against a strong Division 2 Portishead outfit.

Portishead settled the quicker, with debutant keeper Jimmy DeVanney making two smart saves to keep the scores level. At the other end, Earey and Jones both went close from corners and Smith and Owen saw efforts well saved.

Last ditch defending from Page and Riddle saw goalbound efforts thwarted before Owen gave Players the lead, latching onto Page’s pass to score.

Two quick goals after the break saw Players cruise into a 3-0 lead, Owen’s corner being deflected in and 10 minutes later, Owen scored a free kick from 25 yards out.

With Page, Smith and Earey bossing the midfield, Players looked comfortable, but lapses in concentration allowed Portishead back with two goals. Some desperate defending and a string of saves from DeVanney saw Players through to the end. Riddle was solid at the back, Smith, Page and Earey played well in midfield and Owen notched two crackers, but the Frames man of the match went to debutant Jim DeVanney.

SAINTS went into this game looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat.

They started brightly and created some early chances and nearly took the lead when Ryan Hodrien’s header dropped the wrong side of the post. Saints had a great chance to take the lead when Rob Winter was brought down, but Dan Hartley saw his kick saved.

Nailsea soon took the lead when a long range strike flew past Joe Malik. Saints were forced into a change after Joe Whittaker was forced off with injury.

Saints started the second half creating chances, but were kept at bay by the Nailsea keeper who was having an outstanding afternoon.

The Saints defence of Winter, Wilcox, Mitchell and Borrett were looking solid and the midfield of Hayes, Hartley, Whittaker and Troy were still creating chances for strikers Hodrien and Winter.

After a smart backheel from Troy Hayes, Winter smashed home the equaliser. Saints had further chances through
Hodrien, Hayes and Tino, but were denied by the Nailsea keeper.

Portishead Utd B 0

AFTER more than a month off, Westland Reserves cruised back into league action with a resounding 5-0 home win against Portishead United B.

Portishead started strongly and Westlands managed to weather the storm. The hosts soon took the lead when new signing Jake Fisher opened his account for the club with a swerving 20 yard effort that flew past the keeper.

The home side soon made it two when good work from John Galalankis down the left resulted in a cross that was met by the returning John Lambert.

Portishead made changes at the break and pressed for a way back into the game, but were caught on the break when Ryan Evans netted the third. This left the visitors depleted and it wasn’t too long before Westland added their fourth when Kerrigan Briffett capped off a fine display with a fine volley.

Lambert rounded off a good day at the office for the reserves when he nabbed his second and Westland’s fifth off the game.

There were many candidates for man of the match, but centre back Stefan Russ was awarded the honour.

St George EIG A 4

SHIPHAM finally got 2012 underway after being out of action for six weeks.

As the half progressed, Shipham began to create more with the instrumental Jamie Hutchinson and Paul having chances, but shortly before half-time, St George took the lead.

The second half did not start well, St George scoring twice on the counter attack. Jon Winter set up Jamie White for Shipham’s first and Hutchinson laid the ball off for Winter to stroke the ball home to make it 2-3.

However, Shipham were caught out when a long throw, found the St George frontman who managed to steer the ball over Stone in the home goal.

Matt Stewart came off the bench and beat three defenders in a mazy run before scoring to make it 3-4. With time running out, Jamie White had a shot blocked on the line by a St George defender.

Credit goes to Joe Rowsell as manager, who has instilled a strong team spirit. The Shipham man of the match went to Jamie Hutchinson.
