A REFEREE who started out in the football leagues of Weston will be officiating Premiership matches next season.Ron Ganfield, of Madam Lane, Worle, will be lining up as an assistant referee next season, making important decisions in games involving some of the best players in the world. The 45-year-old began his refereeing career in the Weston and District League and has worked his way up to officiating matches in Championship leagues. Now, he will have the chance to run the line at famous grounds such as Old Trafford, Anfield and White Hart Lane.Ron, who recently lined up at the FA Vase final at Wembley, said: "Every game you take part in assessed and you are promoted on the basis of your performance, and I have been promoted to a select group which are chosen to officiate Premiership games."I will still be involved in the Championship games but will be doing a certain number of Premiership as well. It's absolutely brilliant, I could not believe it when I heard, its been a really rapid and it's the first time someone from Weston has officiated in the Premiership."We are short of referees in the Weston area and hopefully something like this will attract younger people into refereeing.
