IN their final home pre-season friendly against Nationwide Conference newcomers Weymouth, Weston started brightly, but in the end were beaten by a slicker and stronger full-time squad. For the first half, Sam Bailey, Gary Thorne and Marvin Brown were rested, so trialists Leigh Henry, Ben Wiltshire and Nat Peperell were in the starting line-up. In the opening minutes, Weston forced two corners and Henry was just over with a header from Scott Walker's flag-kick and later, Henry forced a one-handed save from Taunton keeper Jason Matthews when put through by John Williams. Peperell was put clear by Williams on 11 minutes, but fired wide when challenged by Weymouth's Roy O'Brien.Slightly against the run of play, Weymouth opened the scoring on 21 minutes when Raphael Nade, who normally operates on the left, popped up on the right and beat Ryan Northmore from 10 yards with a shot that went in off a post.Brown replaced Peperell and Sekani Simpson took over from Darren Hawkins for the second half, and Weymouth missed a chance of going further in front on 53 minutes when they were awarded a penalty when Henry handled when making a clearance, but Northmore guessed correctly to Wayne Purser's spot kick.Purser made amends on 61 minutes when he beat Northmore with a superb 25-yard strike on the turn and four minutes later, Chukki Eribenne made it three with a close-range header from Lee Elam's cross.Weston grabbed a consolation on 75 minutes when Brown sent Matthews the wrong way from the penalty spot after the keeper had brought down Craig Herrod.YATE TOWN 2WESTON-S-MARE 1FOR their final warm-up game, Weston sent virtually their Academy team to Southern League Premier Yate, with only keeper Ryan Northmore, Sekani Simpson and Marvin Brown from the side that faced Weymouth. After early Weston pressure, with Brown going close, Yate opened the scoring on 23 minutes when Dave Elsey's free kick was headed back into the six-yard box by former Seagull Jimmy Cox for another ex-Seagull Aaron Blakemore to beat Northmore from close range and minutes later David Seal chipped over the Weston bar with Northmore off his line. At the other end, Craig Herrod had an effort blocked on the line.Cox added Yate's second on 72 minutes when Adam Mayo's shot presented him with the opening.Weston substitute Darren Hawkins pulled a goal back on 79 minutes when he picked up a loose clearance.
