Weston crashed 4-1 at Blue Square South leaders Woking, ending their four match unbeaten run in all competitions.
THE Weston players had an off-night as their four-game run in all competitions came to a shuddering halt at Blue Square South leaders Woking.
It was evident that the visitors had Saturday’s FA Cup game in mind, as they appeared reluctant to make heavy challenges in the pouring rain that lasted the length of the game. In the pre-game warm-up, skipper Ben Kirk felt a slight strain and was substituted by Nat Pepperell, who should have missed the start.
Although Woking were soon in command, Weston defended well with Jamie Price, Jamie Laird, Mat Villis and Jak Martin making sure keeper Lloyd Irish was seldom troubled. Woking’s best chance fell to Elvis Hammond who headed straight into Irish’s arms on 10 minutes.
Up front, Weston relied on Matt Huxley, but he fought a losing battle against the tall home defenders. Weston were given a chance on 30 minutes when Nabi Diallo was brought down just outside the Woking penalty area, that earned a booking for Adam Newton, but Ben Cleverley, on his first start for the club, was over with the free kick.
Right on the stroke of half-time, Weston’s Brett Trowbridge was adjudged to have brought down Moses Ademola and Jack King beat Irish from the penalty spot.
Woking came out for the second half looking to kill the game off with Hammond firing wide on 47 minutes with Irish beaten from Paris Cowan-Hall’s low cross and minutes later they forced three successive corners.
Weston brought on Sahr Kabba for Huxley and came more into the game with Kane Ingram forcing a save from home keeper Aaron Howe and minutes later Pepperell tested the keeper with a header.
Woking struck again on 73 minutes when the Weston defence gave the ball away, allowing Hammond to burst through and score and three minutes later Ademola scored the third, bursting in from the right. On 80 minutes, substitute Giuseppe Sole completed the Woking scoring, finishing another speedy run.
Weston got their consolation on 90 minutes when Kabba was adjudged to have been brought down by Howe and Pepperell scored from the penalty spot.
