CONGRESBURY recorded a deserved victory against a physical Combe St Nicholas side.
The game was played in difficult conditions and the victory was Congresbury’s sixth in a row and keeps them clear at the top of the division.
The game got off to an even start, but Combe went close to opening the scoring when a deep cross clipped the crossbar with stand-in keeper Reece Sullivan beaten. Moments later a Combe striker got behind the Congresbury defence, but Sullivan made an outstanding save to keep the scores level.
Gradually Congresbury’s midfielders Rob Harraway, Seb Williams, Ben Marsh and Moe Lister took control of the game creating chances for Tony Tuckfield and Ash Brown, but the Combe keeper was in fine form.
Congresbury’s pressure paid off and they took a deserved lead when Harraway found Tuckfield unmarked and netted to give Congresbury a 1-0 lead.
The start of the second-half saw Congresbury’s defenders Danny Sprague, Sam Clements, Ollie Clements and Dan Pepworth come under increasing pressure as Combe searched for the equaliser.
Midway through the half, a clearance from his own half by Pepworth deceived the keeper who could only push it on to the crossbar and it fell invitingly for Harraway to make the score 2-0.
Combe hit back almost immediately when a defensive slip allowed a striker to squeeze a shot just inside the post to make the score 2-1. Combe got frustrated, culminating in a red card for a Combe defender.
Congresbury saw the game out safely and at the final whistle, the Combe keeper was red carded for something he said to the referee.
Player of the match was Danny Sprague.
