Team Mendip Under-10 Blue Socks Athletic won the Portishead tournament after defeating St Nicholas in a penalty shoot-out

Team Mendip Under-10 Blue Socks entered two teams into the Portishead tournament, with the Athletic winning the final after a penalty shoot-out.

Team Mendip Blue Socks United, consisting of Taya, Skye, Grace S, Tamsin, Demi M, Isabelle T and Georgia H came runners-up in their group by winning two games and drawing two games and conceding no goals in the process.

Team Mendip Blue Socks Athletic, consisting of Grace B, Isabelle P, Emma B, Leah, Anika, Lily and Seden, won their group by winning all of their games and again conceding no goals.

This set up a Mendip v Mendip semi-final, which was a close affair with both teams giving little away and playing some fantastic football. Unfortunately there had to be a winner, and Seden Djemal stuck late on for Athletic to send them through to the final.

Athletic met St Nicolas in the final and again this was a close affair. The two teams could not be separated in normal time, so the game went to extra-time.

It looked like it was not going to be Athletic’s day when St Nics broke through and beat the keeper, but the ball struck the post and the match went to penalties.

After five penalties had been taken, the two teams were still in deadlock, meaning it went to sudden death. Lily Brown coolly stepped up and scored her penalty, before St Nicolas sent their penalty wide, making Blue Socks Athletic the winners.
