Uphill Castle powered themselves back in to the Somerset County League Division One West title race, courtesy of this victory over Burnham United.

The destroyer-in-chief was forward Daniel Thomas, who was rewarded for a tireless performance with a hat-trick.

The game was less than four minutes old when Jack Askins was hauled down in the box, but the otherwise faultless midfielder failed to convert the resultant spot kick. Within minutes, the home side were awarded another penalty and this time Thomas made no mistake. Thomas doubled the advantage before top score Samuel Beresford increased the lead.

A 40-yard screamer from Michael Deane early in the second period made it 4-1, before Thomas completed his hat-trick.

Askins chipped the advancing keeper to make it 6-1 and Thomas was unlucky not to add a fourth for himself when a shot from Joshua Evans deflected off the keeper into his path, but he lifted the ball just over the bar.

The man of the match award, kindly sponsored by Sytner Mercedes-Benz, Weston, went to Daniel Thomas.

On Saturday, Uphill Castle travel to Illminster Town in more league action (2pm). Martin Avery’s Reserve side entertain Draycott in Division One of the Weston and District League at Bridgwater Road on the same day (2pm).

The programme of games for the weekend is completed by Stephen Corke’s A side who are also in action on Saturday when they travel to Sporting Weston Reserves in Division Five of the Weston and District League (2pm).
