Weston defeated Sutton United 3-2 to pull themselves out of the relegation zone.

WITH barely five minutes of normal time remaining of this highly entertaining Vanarama Conference South encounter, Weston appeared to be strolling to a 3-0 win.

But with the introduction of a couple of substitutes, Sutton took command, scoring twice and came within seconds of forcing a draw.

However, the win lifts Weston out of the relegation zone and they are now in 18th spot in the table.

Ryan Northmore rotated his squad from the side beaten at Bath. Dayle Grubb was out injured with a pulled hamstring and Jacob Cane was rested, Jake Mawford and Kane Ingram taking over.

In a dull scoreless first-half, Sutton created the better of the chances, with Billy Medlock forcing a one-handed save from home keeper Luke Purnell and Craig Dundas scooped an effort over the crossbar from close range.

Although Weston forced a couple of corners, the only effort that troubled visiting keeper Tom Lovelock was a distance effort by Joe McClennan, who led the attack.

Four minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken when on-loan striker Olly Watkins was put through and he shrugged off a couple of challenges before firing low past Lovelock.

Two minutes later at the other end, Jack Evans cracked a shot against the underside of the crossbar, but the defence managed to clear with the ball bouncing on the goal-line.

Weston increased their lead on 66 minutes when Mawford fed Bradley Ash who fired across Lovelock into the far corner.

Mawford completed Weston’s tally on 77 minutes when his high cross went over Lovelock’s head and into the net off the far upright.

By this time Sutton looked a beaten side but they introduced Ricky Wellard wide on the right and Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick wide on the left and they revived the side.

On 85 minutes, Wellard made a strong run and crossed for skipper Charlie Clough to score from close range and two minutes into added on time, Clough struck again, this time from the edge of the penalty area.

With just seconds remaining, Dundas and Glen Southam almost had the ball in the home net, but were denied for a foul on Purnell.
