Weston College’s rugby and football teams were in good form, both recorded recent victories.
WESTON College’s rugby 1st XV travelled to Exeter in the first of a league and cup double.
Weston started brightly with physical carries and line breaks from the forwards, with Jake Powell and Sam Hartshorne consistently giving the team a solid platform.
Weston conceded an early try against the run of play, but this did not last long with Weston crossing the line four times to go into the break 22-5 up.
The second half saw a number of changes, but this did not seem to break up Weston’s momentum, with three more unanswered tries scored.
Weston had two players sent to the sin bin and Exeter scored a well-worked try after a long period of pressure and some poor Weston discipline. With Weston back up to full complement, they scored more points, the best being a length of the field effort from the kick-off, which saw Charlie Birchum Davies cross for his second of the afternoon.
Final score was 46-10 to Weston, giving them great confidence for this week’s elite league fixture again away to Exeter.
The college’s football first team travelled to Keynsham Town to play St Brendan’s and returned with a 5-2 victory.
From the start, Weston put their opponents under pressure, leading to an early penalty scored by Will Sneddon-Coombes. Four minutes later, Groom scored with a brilliant goal after a great passage of two-touch football from the midfield.
St Brendan’s counter attacked to halve the deficit, but four minutes before half-time, Dan O’Leary scored from a cross from Ash Tandy.
Both teams started the second half brightly and both creatied chances which neither team could take. Alex Camm’s powerful shot was too much for the goalkeeper to handle in the 75th minute and two more goals, one from each side, quickly followed making the final score 5-2 to Weston College.
