WESTON recorded their first Vanarama National League South win of the season in a game of few scoring chances in Hertfordshire.
The Seagulls enjoyed a much more comfortable win than the score suggests, as they dominated midfield exchanges, but were held up by some stubborn defending by the squad in 11th spot in the table.
Despite this success, however, Weston are still bottom of the table, but have a game in hand.
Weston were in control from the start, with the defence of Ben Withey, Ollie Barnes, Pat Keary and Clayton Fortune blotting out the home attack, allowing the midfield of Jamie Edge, Tsveton Filipov, Jake Mawford, Dayle Grubb and Jacob Cane to provide strong support for lone striker Scott Wilson.
However, Bishops created the first chance on seven minutes when Matty Fanimo burst through in an isolated attack, but Luke Purnell quickly came off his line to block the effort. Later, Matt Johnson tested Purnell with a 25-yard free kick.
From their second corner on 25 minutes, taken by Grubb, Fortune was just over with a strong header,
The crucial goal came a minute into added-on time at the end of the half when Grubb put Wilson through who broke two tackles before firing low past keeper Tom Lovelock.
For the second half the home side made changes, including substituting a first-half substitute, and they came more into the game, but their finishing was poor, missing the target eight times.
Their best effort fell to leading scorer Elliott Buchanan whose strong effort came back into play off the foot of a post.
Weston brought on Mitchell Page, Tristan Plummer and Alex Byrne for Filipov, Mawford and Wilson, and they ended a flowing move with Cane having a close-range shot well saved by Lovelock.
