A large contingent from Weston made the trip to Hengrove to watch Worle dominate a one-sided Somerset Divisional Cup final in front of a crowd nearing 300.
Worle have faced Long Ashton twice this season in the group stages of this cup with one win apiece, but this time it was a rampant Worle side who took the honours.
Playing with a pacy front three of Ryan Down, Ryan Hodrien and man of the match Tom Adams, Long Ashton had no answer to Worle’s attack, while Ben Dancey in the Worle goal was rarely troubled.
It was not long before Adams put Worle into the lead and shortly afterwards a Connor Down header was adjudged not to have crossed the line. A second goal followed when the Long Ashton keeper clashed with a defender, spilling the ball into Adams path, who then netted.
The third goal was also scored by Adams when he lobbed the keeper from 30 yards. Long Ashton changed their formation at half-time and Worle had to withstand 15 minutes of pressure, without troubling Dancey in the Worle goal. The back four of Worle, Nelson, Down and Potter in control.
Worle hit back with a couple of penalty shouts turned down, but it was not long before the game was sealed when Adams scored his fourth, outpaced the tiring Ashton defence to net.
Ryan Hodrien had a great effort go just wide and Worle’s all-time top goalscorer Rio saw his effort just fly over the bar to bring the curtain down on the game.
Worle now look forward to next season with a league and cup double under their belts and are looking to retain the majority of the squad.
The second team also enjoyed a successful year as they won the Weston & District Division 3 title, losing only two league games all season
The presentation night will be at the Royal Hotel on June 2 and tickets for this event can be purchased from Worle Football Club, priced £15 per person, which includes a buffet and music from Joe Malik. Please call Gary on 07534 957980 for more details.
