Combat Gym’s fight showcase lives up to its billing.

COMBAT Gym’s High Voltage Muay Thai Fight Showcase, sanctioned by the WKF and promoted by Kevin Ludick (Combat Gym), lived up to expectations and proved to be a spectacular success with the home fighters bagging four new title belts.

The show kicked off at the Winter Gardens with Combat Gym’s youngest fighter - Jayley Wood (7). His opponent Charlie Kendall (Look Borai) was a year younger, but 10kgs heavier. The boys fought a five-round demo and are both fighters to watch in the future.

Also making their debut fights for Combat Gym were Adam Jones, Jake Lewis, Matt Swash and Adam Faltyn. All four fighters put in a great performances, with Swash and Faltyn coming away with wins, Lewis losing narrowly on points and Jones’ declared a draw.

Next up were Combat Gym’s more experienced fighters Ryan Budd and Dan Gifford whose opponents were George Worthington (Sakpresert) and Adam Tomas (MSA) respectively.

This was probably Gifford’s best fight to date as the bout was declared a draw. Budd gave a brave performance with some great combinations, but lost on points.

First title fight of the night was for the WKF Pro-Am British heavyweight belt. The ‘Battle of the Big Men’ was between Mat Allsworth (Combat Gym) and Lee Grinrod (King Tiger) with Allsworth declared the new British champion.

In a re-match for the WKA junior girls’ title at 52kgs, Vicky Browning (Combat Gym) took on Lucy Symth (Eagles). The first round was close but in the second, Smyth capitalised on her height and the ref stopped the fight, declaring Smyth the new Anglo-Welsh junior champion.

Current Southern Area junior champion Rob Bonefaas took on Josh Batty (WPT) to compete for the WKF Anglo-Welsh title at 58kgs. Bonefaas controlled Batty in true technical muay thai fighting style and outclassed him and was declared the winner on points and is now the new Anglo-Welsh title holder.

Undefeated Brent Chambers (Combat Gym) continued his superb winning streak and was declared the new WKF Anglo-Welsh champion at 70kgs after defeating Matt Ashmole (WPT) by way of TKO.

The next title fight was the fight of the night. Nick Daglish (Combat Gym) and Jason Collard (Eagles) put their titles on the line and also competed for the WKF Anglo-Welsh title at 64kgs.

These two have met before with Daglish the winner, so both men had everything to fight for. There was nothing between these two fighters until the fifth round when Collard edged slightly ahead on points which led to him being declared the new WKF champion.

Duane Barnes (Sweat Box) fought and won a great fight against Adam Frielander (Sakpresert) and was declared the WKF British Pro-Am champion at 78kgs.

Current WKA British champion Kade Sherlock (Combat Gym) stepped up a weight category to compete for the WKF British Pro-Am title at 74kgs against Dominic Thomson (Look Borai). Sherlock’s experience and technical ability paid off and he was declared the winner on points after five rounds and is now the new WKF British champion.
