Burnham and Berrow Golf Club defeated Mendip Spring in the first round of the Mail on Sunday competition.
BURNHAM and Berrow Golf Club played their first round match of the Mail on Sunday National Classic competition against local rivals, Mendip Spring.
The conditions were extremely tricky, with a strong wind and occasional rain showers. This seemed to favour the home team as they ran out winning by a margin of four and a half to a half. Ellis Cook, David Gregory, Trevor Hicks and Neil Darby all won their matches and Justin Lane achieved a half.
The knockout competition consists of eight qualifying rounds, and should the team be successful, they will play in the quarter and semi-finals in Manchester and the final in Spain.
■ WORLEBURY Golf Club ladies section played host to Burnham & Berrow in the Mail on Sunday competition.
After a close match ending in a draw after all five matches had been played (2.5 points each), Worlebury finally ended up the winners in an exciting sudden death play-off with Helen Clarke, the last player returning to the first tee, going on to win the deciding hole giving Worlebury the victory.
The Worlebury players were Helen Clarke, Emma Limer, Amanda Cook, Maxine Gardiner and Michelle James.
It was an outstanding day for the Ladies with three of the team being assisted by their mother as caddies.
■ TONY Romeo mastered the stiff breeze blowing at Brean Golf Club as he accumulated 38 points on his way to winning the Winter League round on Saturday.
He secured a two shot victory over the experienced Roger Phillips and rising star Phil Hodgson. Phillips just edged out his younger counterpart on countback to take the runners-up prize on 36 points.
Weather also dominated the re-arranged seniors’ Stableford. After strong winds put paid to the original staging, it went ahead at the second attempt but on temporary greens after a heavy overnight frost.
With the larger holes scoring was slightly easier for the field and five players topped the 40 point mark. Two managed 45 and the computer decreed that by countback Mike Allen was victorious over seniors’ chairman Wally Pape over the back nine holes. Keith Saunders took third on 42.
Brean professional Andrew March was in scintillating form in last week’s Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Minehead.
He carded seven consecutive birdies on the front nine before adding another birdie and an eagle in the first six holes of his back nine. This saw him stand at 10 under par with three holes remaining and thoughts of a 59 entered his head.
A poor finish though saw him drop three shots in the closing three holes and he signed for a seven under par 65, which was still good enough for a convincing six stroke victory.
This win sees March move to the top of the Total Triumph Order of Merit at the halfway point of the season. David Haines showed some improved form, but like his Brean colleague he suffered a poor finish which kept him out of the prizes.
