THE worst of the wintry weather had not yet hit when the Isle of Wedmore seniors set out for their monthly medal on Thursday.

Leading the way was Dave Scarrott with an excellent net 62 which saw him win Division 1 by three clear shots. Runner-up was Ian Robson who scored a fine 65 with Mike Atkins a further two shots behind in third.

The good scoring was not restricted to the top division as Mike Peacock came in with a net 64 to win Division 2, with Colin Clegg on 66 claiming second place ahead of Jim Sims on 67.

By Thursday the weather was deteriorating and the early frosts caused some winter greens to be in operation. This did not dampen the enthusiasm of the ladies for their Christmas Pudding competition when the number of clubs were limited to 10 and a putter.

The full result of this is not to be made available until after the puddings have been awarded, but it can be reported that Margaret Rogers had the best round of the day, recording 44 points and the Bronze Division played much better than Silver.

On Saturday for the club medal, there was sufficient snow on the course to cause a cancellation.

The mixed competition did go ahead on Sunday, albeit reduced to nine holes and played as a Bowmaker. The scores were surprisingly good and best of all were Trish Phelps, Vera Ireland, Martin Olive and John Russell, who scored 45 points.

Members are reminded that the club AGM takes place on Sunday, when some important changes to the constitution are being decided.

? THE winner of the Worlebury Ladies Christmas Stableford was Jill Phillips, who scored 40 points, closely followed by Helen Clarke with 38 and Wendy Larner (34).

The four clubs and a putter competition proved far more daunting under present conditions. Eighteen temporary greens put a slight strain on putting skills but a surprisingly close finish resulted in a win for Janet Jamieson scoring 34 on the front three, followed by Carol Miles (34), Larner (33) and all on the back nine, Lynne Pope, Thora Hollister and Jan Simms with 31.

The individual Stableford on the shorter winter course saw a plethera of twos and the winner on the back nine was Jill Webb who scored 40 points, beating Janice Hartree (40), Emma Limer (39) and Jean Beat (37).

? BARRY Fisher won the Lukee Christmas Cup on Sunday at Brean with a card of 44 points.

It was the only event that beat the weekend freeze and he secured victory by a single point over Mike Porter.

The competition saw 40 players start out in the shotgun start, but not all of them completed the round due to the sub-zero temperatures. Porter edged out Steve Jones on countback for second after they had both accumulated 43 points.

With the temporary greens in use, scoring was low throughout the field and 42 points from Tony Groves was only good enough for fourth spot.
